European Commission Press release Brussels, 21 May 2024 A vast majority of Europeans (86%) believe that everyone should speak at least one foreign language, and almost three out of five (59%) can have a conversation in one.
European Council President Charles Michel and South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa had a telephone conversation. The two leaders held a positive and constructive discussion on a range of bilateral, regional and global issues that they share as strategic partners.
The President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Group Nadia Calviño met Poland’s political leadership today to discuss strategic priorities for future financing and to announce the first Polish satellite programme. She exchanged views with Donald Tusk, Poland’s Prime Minister, and is also meeting Radosław Sikorski, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Andrzej Domański, Minister of Finance on how the EIB Group can support Poland’s national policy objectives with strategic investments. They discussed growth-enhancing investments in Poland, measures recently approved to strengthen Europe’s security and defence industry, and further substantial financing to support Poland’s energy security and green transition.
The European Investment Bank (EIB) announced backing today for the development and launch of two Earth observation satellites that will provide high-resolution imagery for civilian and defence applications in Poland. The EIB is lending €300 million to Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) for the project to support the European space industry with the latest technology in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. It comes after the EIB’s Board of Directors approved the EIB Group’s new Security and Defence Industry Action Plan which is intended to step up investments in the sector.
