Serbia: EIB Vice-President Pavlova signs second EU grant for Belgrade – Niš railway

Only a month after the first grant was signed, EIB Global signed a second EU grant for €174.6 million for the subsection Paraćin – Trupale – Međurovo rail route, part of an EU financial package totalling €2.2 billion for the Belgrade – Niš section of the Railway Corridor X. The first grant under the Western Balkans Investment Framework (€82.8 million) was signed in February 2023. The funds will enable the upgrade and modernisation of 230 km of railway. This will enable travel speeds of up to 200 km/h between Belgrade and Niš, increase trade flows and stimulate economic growth along the route.

Action in Romania and the Republic of Moldova against trafficking of doping substances

With the support of Eurojust and Europol, the Romanian and Moldovan authorities have taken action against an organised crime group (OCG) suspected of trafficking high-risk doping substances. During a joint action, 11 suspects were arrested, and raw materials intended for the production of more than one million doses of anabolic steroids were seized. Eurojust assisted the authorities in setting up and funding a joint investigation team (JIT) into the case.

Luxembourg: Biodiversity and climate change adaptation - EU finances ecological restoration of Alzette river network

Minister of Finance Yuriko Backes, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development Joëlle Welfring and Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Kris Peeters presented a financing agreement between Luxembourg and the EIB to fund the ecological restoration of the Alzette river and its tributary, the Pétrusse. The works will cover a section of the Alzette located in the town of Steinsel, and a section of the Pétrusse located in Luxembourg City. The project has received an EIB loan for €9 million, granted under the Natural Capital Financing Facility (NCFF), part of the European Union’s LIFE programme.

EIB approves “EU for Ukraine” Initiative to finance Ukraine recovery and reconstruction, and backs transport, energy and business investment around the world

The Board of Directors of the European Investment Bank (EIB) today approved the EU for Ukraine Initiative, a new scheme to finance reconstruction and recovery in Ukraine. The EU for Ukraine Initiative is conceived as a temporary scheme which will enable continued EIB engagement in the country while expected medium term EU support is put in place.
