Europe Day 2021

Europe Day held on 9 May every year celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historic 'Schuman declaration' that set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable. Schuman's proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.

Joining Europe Day

To celebrate Europe Day, the EU institutions traditionally open their doors to the public in early May. Yet, as in the previous edition, in 2021 the sanitary situation did not allow to organise the traditional Open Days in Brussels and European capitals, instead the institutions threw open their virtual doors. The largely digital Europe Day offered the opportunity to reach out to citizens beyond Brussels, bringing Europe closer to all Europeans.

Europe Day coincided with the launch of the Conference on the Future of Europe – the EU platform that allows Europeans to have their say and their voice heard.
