New EU rules to better protect journalists, their sources and press freedom apply in all EU countries as of 8 August 2025. Among other measures, the new rules enhance transparency of media outlet ownership, improve allocation of state advertising, and strengthen public media independence.
Applications are open for the design of future euro banknotes. The European Central Bank has selected two themes for the notes: “European culture” and “Rivers and birds”. The public will be invited to give feedback on winning designs. Designers across Europe have until 18 August to apply.
